DFT Communications Turns Up the Speed with New Multi-Gig Internet Service

Local provider brings Northern Chautauqua County its first residential multi-gig internet option

FREDONIA, N.Y. — Faster internet has officially arrived in Northern Chautauqua County.

DFT Communications has launched its new multi-gig fiber internet service, giving local residents access to speeds beyond the traditional 1 Gig level. DFT is now the only provider offering residential multi-gig internet in Northern Chautauqua County.

For DFT, bringing new technology to the community is nothing new.

The company’s story began in 1898, when Arthur R. Maytum installed Fredonia’s first telephone in his Water Street grocery store. He needed a faster way to contact the railroad depot and find out when produce shipments would arrive. That practical solution eventually grew into the Dunkirk & Fredonia Telephone Company, which began serving the community with just 64 customers.

More than 125 years later, DFT is still finding new ways to keep local families, businesses, and communities connected.

“We have seen a lot of technology come and go over the years, but our purpose has stayed pretty consistent,” said Mark R. Maytum, President and CEO of DFT Communications. “We want to make sure the people in our community have access to the technology they need, along with the kind of local service they deserve.”

DFT has helped guide the area through nearly every major stage of modern communications. The company moved from telephone service into dial-up internet, then DSL, wireless broadband, and fiber optics. Now, DFT is taking the next step with multi-gig service.

Anyone within DFT’s service area who can receive DFT Fiber Internet can sign up for the new Next Level package, featuring speeds of up to 2 Gigabits per second download and 1 Gigabit per second upload. In select locations where the network supports fully synchronous service, customers can upgrade to Next Level Sync, which offers speeds of up to 2 Gig download and 2 Gig upload.

“Being the first to bring residential multi-gig service to Northern Chautauqua County is something our entire team can be proud of,” Maytum said. “It shows that a local company can continue to grow, invest, and deliver technology that keeps our communities moving forward.”

So, what does multi-gig internet actually mean for the average household?

It means more room for everything happening online. Families can stream, game, work from home, join video calls, upload files, use smart-home devices, and connect dozens of devices without everyone competing for the same bandwidth.

Upload speed is becoming especially important. Many traditional internet plans trick unsuspecting consumers by focusing heavily on download speed, but today’s customers are sending more information than ever before. Video calls, cloud backups, social media content, security cameras, online gaming, and large file transfers all rely on strong upload performance.

“We all use the internet in so many different ways now,” said Scott Wise, Director of Customer Experience at DFT. “One person might be on a work call, someone else is gaming, the kids are streaming, and photos are backing up in the background. Multi-gig gives the whole household more breathing room.”

Synchronous service takes that experience one step further by providing the same speed in both directions. Customers can upload information just as quickly as they download it, which can make a real difference for remote workers, creators, gamers, and anyone regularly sending large files.

“It used to be that this was technology you’d have to live in or travel to a big city to have access to” Wise said. “But now it’s available right here from a local team. We live here, we work here, and we’re excited to bring something this big to the community.”

The launch also includes new promotional pricing and a return to DFT’s Value-Based Offering approach, with internet packages designed around the needs of different households. But as always, DFT is clear on what pricing will look like when the promotional period ends; a promise they stick by.
