Enjoy These Six Famous TV Dads for Father’s Day

Every Father’s Day, families around America recognize and appreciate the often overlooked and under-appreciated role that dads play in our everyday lives.

And, of course, television has provided some of the most recognizable father figures that untold millions have learned from, admired, and laughed with!

Thanks to living in the “Golden Age of Streaming,” you can enjoy the very best of famous TV dads from decades past to the present day on DFT’s high-speed fiber internet.

And thanks to MyBundle, you can easily find the famous fathers of the small screen in one seamless dashboard to access them across all your streaming apps and channels. Below, we take a deep dive at six TV dads and share some of our all-time favorites you can enjoy streaming at home, too!

1. Andy Taylor, The Andy Griffith Show (Paramount+)

We begin with one of the most venerable fathers in television history: Andy Taylor, played by the legendary Andy Griffith.

Raising his son Opie as a single dad—with considerable help from Aunt Bee—is one of the series’ main themes, and the values and seemingly simple moral virtues he imparted to his son have endeared Sheriff Taylor to millions of people across the decades.

The show’s fictionalized location in the southern town of Mayberry also rekindles nostalgia for fans and recalls the “everyone-knows-everyone” way of life in small-town America during the mid-20th century.

2. Danny Tanner, Full House (Prime Video, Hulu)

Next on our list is a family sitcom staple from the 80s and 90s—the late Bob Saget’s Danny Tanner from Full House.

For many viewers, Saget’s portrayal of the widowed father to three girls exemplified the affable dad trying his best to provide emotional and material support for the family. Though Full House is often teased for the syrupy sentimentality that drips off the screen, Danny Tanner’s wholesome spirit and dry wit were genuine and believable—which made him among the most beloved TV dads of all time.

3. Eric Taylor, Friday Night Lights (Hulu, Netflix, Prime Video)

The unforgettable mingling of high school football and small-town living was richly developed in Friday Night Lights, particularly through the Taylor family.

Coach Taylor, portrayed with great heart by Kyle Chandler, was the quintessential TV drama dad for millions of fans. Partly a surrogate father to team players who didn’t have a stable home, Eric Taylor was in some ways even a surrogate dad on the screen to viewers around the country.

4. Bob Belcher, Bob’s Burgers (Hulu)

Our favorite animated father is Bob himself from Bob’s Burgers.

Juggling a complicated family life, which includes his strong-willed, supportive wife, Linda, and his three ever-eccentric children, Bob Belcher somehow finds time to run a small business and manage the chaos of a five-person American family at the same time.

The voice talents of H. Jon Benjamin brilliantly capture all the exasperation and vitality of the everyday highs and lows of family life and the restaurant business.

5. Carl Winslow, Family Matters (Hulu, Max)

Another TV dad who was determined to do his best to maintain order and decorum amidst the commotion of an extended family was Family Matters’ Carl Winslow.

And when one extended family member happens to be the uber-nerd (and utter oddball) neighbor Steve Urkel, any father’s patience would be stretched to the breaking point!

Played by Reginald VelJohnson, Carl inexplicably manages to keep it all together while radiating warmth and heart in ways that made America chuckle for nine seasons.

6. Eddard ‘Ned’ Stark, Game of Thrones (Max)

The final father on our list is unlike the other dads we’re profiling— Game of Thrones’ Eddard Stark.

Though most often associated with epic battles and searing political backstabbing and intrigue, Game of Thrones does not lack intimate family drama. And Ned Stark, patriarch of the Stark clan, demonstrates the complex entanglements of politics and personal struggles—and their impacts on the lives of his children—more so than anyone.

Sean Bean’s fatherly wisdom imparted insight about bravery in the face of fear. It admirably nurtured the interests and skills of all his children, offering a model for all dads today. However, make sure to watch Game of Thrones without the kids around!
